Our final exhibit of the TFAS Permanent Collection,
Treasures from Our Collection: 75th Anniversay Exhibition
is on display at the TFAS Studio + Gallery through November 2024.
The TFAS Collection
The only permanent, public collection in Toledo entirely comprising work by local artists, the TFAS collection represents a 75-year survey of the unique artistic trends of our region. The TFAS collection was established in 1948, with its first artwork acquired through the newly-formed Purchase Award of the Toledo Area Artists Exhibition and subsequent acquisitions have increased the collection through further awards and curated donation.

The TFAS permanent collection now numbers over 200 works of art in many media. Pieces from the collection were long displayed in numerous municipal and community locations, until being gathered “home” by TFAS for archiving and conservation. In 2021, TFAS embarked upon a thorough documentation process to photograph and assess every artwork in the collection, for publication of a TFAS collection catalog.
With the opening of the TFAS Studio + Gallery, for the first time selections of the TFAS permanent collection became accessible to the general public on continuous, rotating display—now marking the 75th anniversary of this unique and distinguished body of art. And ensuing from the dissolution of TFAS in January 2025, the TFAS permanent collection has found a new home at Schedel Arboretum & Gardens!
In June 2024, TFAS concluded a transfer of ownership agreement with The Schedel Foundation of Schedel Arboretum & Gardens in Elmore, Ohio. The TFAS permanent collection will be in their excellent care, under rotating display, to be exhibited in perpetuity at their beautiful facility.
Schedel Arboretum & Gardens is a longstanding member of TFAS. Schedel Foundation Executive Director Rod Noble states, "We are delighted with the opportunity to ensure that the TFAS art collection will be able to remain intact and for the increased opportunities for the public to enjoy those works at Schedel’s facilities. About 15 years ago when I became the director of Schedel, its mission expanded from increasing opportunities for the appreciation and study of nature to also include those same opportunities for the arts. The original idea was to demonstrate the harmony between nature and the arts through outdoor sculpture, and that has grown to include many different forms and mediums of art—now including the TFAS permanent collection.”
An ”unveiling of the collection” event is being planned by the Schedel Foundation to take place in summer of 2025 at their Elmore, Ohio location.
